Life has it's own flow alright! A marriage breakup, a brother dies, going out on a limb for a colleague, a prestigious gig, a music seminar, a pub gig, being the target of intense jealousy, crestfallen, breast cancer, days fallen into sorrow, speaking in Wellington, more days off work, a farewell, a first day, an email setting boundaries, grandchild arrives, a level day (finally), being accused of something, don't know what to think and feel, being pressured.

Heres another film that I really enjoyed when I was a kid. I love the imagination of this movie, special effects with limited technology way before any of our present day CGI. The story was also watchable and interesting.

Moments in the flow - a book on the road ("are you gonna pick that up?"), a piano, a bird falls, dead, from the sky, at precisely the moment of a job offer, a text arrives, a blow fly against the window, dream of the wounded, lying on a river bank, victimhood left in the land of Oz. But, of course, every moment, every action, every quality is a tohu, if one has the desire and sensitivity to see, to feel.

Apocalypse Now

This is one of my all time favourite films. I love the scale and the drama of this film. And the story is phenomenal. Its based upon Joseph Conrad's novel 'Heart of Darkness' which was first adapted for radio by Orson Wells. I think Wells planned to make a film of it at some point. It was not till the 1970s when film maker Francis Ford Coppola made this movie loosely based Conrad's novel. Of course, Coppola transports the story to 1960s Vietnam and the war there. Anyway, its a phenomenal movie.

Life has its own script!

At precisely the same time as my daughter is giving birth, I'm next door in a waiting room watching on BBC World the rescue of 33 Chilean miners trapped for over two months in a collapsed mine deep underground. Slowly, one by one, each miner is brought to the surface through a small vessel winched down through an impossibly narrow tube reaching deep within the earth. Each miner emerges remarkably well, their relief explodes to touch all around them. They are literally reborn, brought back to life by the most miraculous of means. The President of Chile describes the rescue as a miracle and the world watches continuously bearing witness to the long, slow yet wonderful process. Life has its own script. Conscious participants bear witness to its wonder. My daughter gives birth, another miracle, to a bright, bouncy baby boy. No script is required, no need to take control. Just a knowing, a faith in the wondrous energies of nature and how life will always renew itself.

The Way it is, the way we want it to be

Indeed this is the struggle, this is the challenge, the way it is, the way we want it to be. Words misunderstood, meanings taken the wrong way, decisions unfolding unexpectedly. Lines of life flow out into a distance we can not know. Just what is in front of us, about our feet, that's what Yazzie Burkhart wants us to focus on. Not some distant horizon, not some phantom possibility, but what is really about us, I guess what is really real. This brings us back to presence, to immediacy but it doesn't yet solve it - what we want and the way things actually are.

Paris Texas by Win Wenders

One of my all time favourite movies is 'Paris, Texas' by Wim Wenders. It is a deeply evocative and haunting love story. Like all love stories, it has real pain in it represented by the terrible longing of a man 4 years in the wilderness looking for his long lost love - and her downfall in the brothels and strip joints of Texas. Their final encounter in the one way mirror room of a cheap strip joint is absolutely incredible. A masterpiece of storytelling. Of course, the film is made more successful by a stunning soundtrack by Ry Cooder and the script by Sam Shepard is sublime. When I saw this movie, it made me want to be an artist. Its tempo, mood and overall style was shocking in the way it could move me. I love this movie! Here's the trailer:

I remember as a youngster that I couldn't wait to get to college... not because school was terribly interesting... but because on Saturday nights, the school would play movies for the borders in the school hall. This was really exciting for us and I couldn't wait to start college so I could go to those movies too. They were played on an old 16mm movie reel projector and the first movie I saw was Francois Truffaut's 'Fahrenheit 451' based on the Ray Bradbury novel. The old brick walls and the deep brown and ornate wood lining the hall seemed to add to the odd atmosphere of the movie. I didn't have the foggiest idea what the movie was about but I sat through it because it was cool to spend Saturday night watching movies in the school hall.
